If you never try…

Discipleship, Series

This week, our Leadership Council met with our current landlords to discuss the facility needs of our church. It’s all very technical stuff about square footage, quiet enjoyment, and facility maintenance. You know, the kind of stuff that makes you want to roll over and go back to sleep…at least for me. There are few things I enjoy less than talking about buildings.

Along the way, I began explaining our needs on Wednesday nights.

Only 2 short years ago, we approached David and Stephanie Henderson about coming to Journey and starting a youth group. The first night they met, I believe there were 4 people. That included David and Stephanie. It certainly wasn’t a windfall of students for our freshly launched youth group, but we were committed and David and Stephanie were raring to go.

This fall, they started the season with 27 people…22 students and I believe 5 adult leaders. They were set apart with a task, and they are thriving.

Back up a couple of months…

For years, Deidra and I have prayed for fresh leadership in our Children’s Ministry and we had gotten to know a new young couple at Journey, Christie and Kevin Crowe. After being with Journey for about a year, we approached Christie to become the Children’s Director for 2nd – 5th graders.

As Christie was just getting her feet wet, she had an idea to begin a new ministry for kids on Wednesday nights, right away. While I was nervous to start too much too soon, she was confident that this is what needed to happen.

Now 3 weeks into the semester, and they are averaging around 12 people in the room. 9 kids and approximately 3 leaders. They have been set apart for a task, and they are thriving.

Every now and then I ask myself the simple question of “What if we hadn’t tried?”

What if we hadn’t tried to start a church?
What if we hadn’t asked David and Stephanie or Christie and Kevin to launch out on new frontiers with us?
What if…

The truth is, God has set us apart for some really great things. Some of those are in the church…and some aren’t. But, all of them will require us to step out of our comfort zones and try something.

Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Try something.
Even if it seems crazy.

Try something.
Even if you fail.

Try something.
Even if the world doesn’t see the point in it all.

Because God created you to try something for His Kingdom if you will just trust in His wisdom.

What will you try?
