Looking Up When Everything Seems Down

We love for things to happen naturally…
…to form fast friends without effort…
…to always be happy and never be offended or hurt…
…to wake up with hope for the day and go to bed with thankfulness in our hearts…

However, that is not always how things go. In fact, that’s not always what happens “naturally” in life (think puberty and pimples – both which are natural).

With all of the terrible events happening in our contemporary world, it is very easy to wake up discouraged and hopeless, frustrated and angry, and expecting the worst instead of hoping for the best…
But, it doesn’t have to happen that way. We can choose to do what may feel unnatural but is ultimately, much more healthy.

The Bible describes it as a choice that YOU have to make.

2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:2–4 (ESV)

And…

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8–9 (ESV)

The news is coming fast and furiously with terrible news of way, active shooters, massive loss of life, and oppression around the world. Each of these things grieve the heart of God and all who follow Him, but they can not dominate the thought life of a a messenger tasked to deliver good news to a dying world.

As you are tempted to fall into discouraged despair over the news in the world or the hardships in your life, you can CHOOSE to set your mind on the things that bring hope and, ultimately, peace.

May you experience peace in the midst of a world without it.
