Compass Point #5

Discipleship

The choice to follow Jesus is one of the most freeing decisions you will ever make. Knowing Him and resting in His grace is the beginning of becoming a new creation and having a calmer soul. It’s the result of incredible love given to us freely through Jesus Christ. If you think about it, love is always demonstrated through commitment. We will be there when things are hard or shaky. If you are in need, we will help you. When you feel tired, depressed, or alone, we demonstrate our love by being there even when it’s inconvenient. We will put your needs before our own. Jesus demonstrated His commitment to us through His love.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6–8 (ESV)

Most of us will not be asked to give our physical life for Jesus, though many do every day around the world. Instead, we are called to emulate the life and teachings of Jesus. That commitment demonstrates our love to Him.

And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister. Colossians 1:21–23 (ESV)

This kind of life is unbelievably exciting if you are willing to take the leap to be all in. What about you? Will you make the leap?

Truth: Jesus demonstrated what God had in mind.

Question: How can I demonstrate my love/commitment to God?
