If you ask 10 people around you what their greatest dreams are about, 9 of them will probably say something about being happy. It may be couched in the terms of “a better job”, “more free time”, “less stress”, etc.
What if God had a better dream? A bigger dream? A God-Sized dream?
Throughout the book of Nehemiah, we watch the story of a man that was gripped with such a dream…to rebuild the walls of his home city while being employed by the reigning political power in the world. He was so gripped, that he was willing to risk his life in the pursuit of the dream.
3 And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.” 4 As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. Nehemiah 1:3–4 (ESV)
The problem with most people? They have forgotten what’s it like to dream a dream that breathes life into them. One that isn’t just about personal growth, but the growth of something much, much bigger.
God has such a dream for you! One that will simultaneously scare you to death and cause your heart to race with anticipation.
Along the way, Nehemiah would have to face great odds, incredible opposition, and the temptation to abandon it all.
