The Politics of Fear

What is wrong with us as American Christians that we would be willing to compromise our faith in order to press our political point forward?

I think much of the motivation comes from fear. Christians have become so wrapped up in the politics of our country that they have actually forgotten Who is in charge.

We fear what a new President might bring:

We fear that we might lose financial status.
We fear that we might lose social status.
We fear that we might lose freedoms.
We fear that we might lose rights.

The truth is all of those things we fear losing are not in a candidate’s control, they are under God’s control and God isn’t surprised by the actions of any of our current or potential leaders.

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭13:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Two important things to note in that verse are that God holds the ultimate authority and those that govern us are only doing so because God has instituted it.

Who should we fear then? These verses promise us what comes from fearing God:

“You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭115:11‬ ‭ESV‬

“In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭14:26-27‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭103:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭15:16‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭145:19‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭19:23‬ ‭ESV‬‬

As this crazy election year continues I encourage you to place your focus on God, unlike earthly candidates He will never break His promises to us.
