Becoming a Disciple

What does becoming a disciple mean?

Becoming a disciple, in it’s simplest form, is choosing to be an apprentice of someone. You are choosing to be with them, become like them, and eventually do what they did. To be a Christian is simply to choose to be an apprentice (or disciple) of Jesus Christ.

Becoming a disciple of Jesus is the most freeing decision that you will ever make. It means that you are choosing to live the way of Jesus and allow Him to make you into a new creation. At Journey, we encourage you to make 3 primary commitments in your journey as a disciple.

3 Primary Commitments

1. Disciples commit to BE with Jesus.
But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. 1 John 2:5–6 (NLT)

2. Disciples commit to BECOME like Jesus.

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40 (ESV)

3. Disciples commit to DO what Jesus did.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)
